On Tuesday, 12 December 2023, representatives from Yadha Muru Foundation joined 30 students and staff from Milingimbi School and Pymble Ladies’ College for a Tribal Warrior Cruise on Sydney Harbour.
Aboard the Mari Nawi (“Big Canoe”), we learned about the rich history and traditions of the Gadigal, Guringai, Wangal, Gammeraigal and Wallumedegal people. The day included captivating stories, customary fishing methods, traditional dancing and a visit to the historic Be-lang-le-wool (Clark Island).
We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nations who were the first sovereign peoples of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, and possessed it under their own laws and customs.
We pay respect to their Elders - past, present and future. We make a commitment to move forward in a spirit of reconciliation. We value the unique status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the original custodians of these lands and waters. Our nation must have the courage to own the truth and to heal the wounds of its past so that we can move on together at peace with ourselves. We want a future where all Australians enjoy their rights, accept their responsibilities, and have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. We dare to hope for a united country where all Australians respect this land of ours; value the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage; and value the unique cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and those who have come more recently to this land.
